3 Tips for Better Health
What are three simple ways to keep your pet healthy and safe?
Check with your veterinarian before buying medications online
The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) recently issued a consumer alert about buying drugs online. According to the FDA, some discount pet drugs Web sites are operating against the law and putting pets at risk by selling:
- Expired medications, which may limit or eliminate effectiveness
- Unapproved drugs for foreign Internet pharmacies or manufacturers
- Counterfeit pet products -- "fake" drugs that look authentic
- Prescription medications without requiring a prescription (very dangerous)
To keep your pet safe and healthy, please check with your veterinarian before ordering drugs online.
Help keep your pet's teeth and mouth clean and healthy
Oral health affects your pet's overall health in a number of ways. This is why it's very important to help keep your pet's teeth clean and to watch for any problems. Bacteria and toxins build up in a pet’s mouth and can be spread to all parts of the body as it breathes, swallows and chews. To avoid chronic infections and organ damage, consider brushing your pet’s teeth with a veterinary-approved toothbrush and paste, and have regular cleanings at your veterinary hospital (annually or every six months—ask your veterinarian what your pet needs).
Be sure your pet sees your veterinarian for annual wellness visits
Annual screenings, vaccinations, physical exams and teeth cleanings can help protect your pet from a wide variety of hidden ailments that are difficult to notice. For example, your pet may be harboring heartworm disease but not show any obvious signs, or your aging pet may need to change diets for maximum vitality. For your best friend's lifelong health, visit your veterinarian at least annually for a thorough wellness checkup.
